Beskrivelse

Music therapy in rehabilitation under the neuroscience lens: emerging evidence and future challenges Evolving neuroscience research informs us that merely listening to music activates a widespread bilateral network of brain regions involved in motor function, memory, semantic and emotional processing. The last ten years has seen much fruitful collaboration between the disciplines of music therapy and neuroscience, improving our understanding of how targeted interventions might support neuroplasticity, and efforts to rehabilitate individuals with neurological disorders. In this presentation I will provide an overview of exciting new research enabling a greater understanding of music therapy from a neuroscience perspective. Examples of interventions supporting changes in neural processing underlying audio-motor coupling, attention, mood, cognition, language and vision, illustrate significant benefits for populations with movement disorders, visual neglect, aphasia, anxiety and depression. With disorders of consciousness, my on-going research illustrates how music therapy may improve arousal and awareness levels to support accurate assessment, with important implications for rehabilitation. The potential benefits and challenges of continued dialogue between music therapy, neuroscience and rehabilitation medicine will be outlined.
