Organisation Profile

The Esbjerg Energy Section offers research expertise within the areas of offshore energy systems such as enhanced oil recovery and offshore wind energy systems. Onshore the research areas are system approach oriented, focusing on bioenergy systems and combined energy systems of wind, solar and conventional energy systems. Focus is on system optimisation and control optimisation of integrated energy systems based on sustainable conditions.

Offshore Energy Systems

The Esbjerg Section’s research within offshore oil and gas focuses on the automation, instrumentation and optimisation of upstream processes and production facilities. The researchers within the section have strong competence and leading knowledge in the produced water treatment, plant-wide production optimisation as well as multiphase flow metering technology. Subsea robotics is also a key area, which is a new research technology field for subsea activities in offshore installations. Our research also cover reliable satellite operation for marine installations and advanced wind energy pitch control through either electrical or fluid power actuators in order to make fail-safe wind pitch systems more reliable. Within these areas, the Esbjerg Energy Section has a close cooperation with a variety of offshore companies and a number of joint research projects are undergoing.

Sustainable Energy Systems

This research covers multiple disciplines, but our focus lies within specific areas such as CFD-modelling of medium to large scale biomass and waste combustion as well as test-boiler trials fully integrated with a local based advanced boiler company. Bio refinery and Biogas R&D&D as well as biomass resource mapping by GIS supports an increased share of renewables from biomass in the Danish energy system, aligned with smart grid and smart energy systems. In this respect we also undertake PV-solar and passive solar projects and also the horizontal integration of these systems.

Research Mission

The research in the Esbjerg Energy Section is cross cutting and supports the multiple energy sector company platform in the region of Esbjerg and Southern Denmark in order to control and optimise offshore/onshore energy systems at the highest level for efficiency and cost reduction and their full integration. We cooperate widely with local and regional based companies as well as with German universities in the cross border area.
