Advanced Research in Technology, Engineering Education and Science

Aalborg University has for decades been front-runners in the development of Problem Based and Project Based Learning (PBL) within engineering and science and PBL ARTES is at the core of this constant evolving. The notion of the Latin ARTES being a plurality and multiplicity of cultural, social, scientific and technical skills, methods, knowledge, science and abilities to cope with and reflect on problems of the real.

PBL-ARTES places an emphasis on cultural and social approaches to learning and education in engineering and science by using interdisciplinary research methods mainly based on theory of science, education and technological development. These interdisciplinary approaches also encompass inter cultural learning, gender studies, creativity, appliance and development of virtual technologies in education and learning, and meta-theoretical reflection.

The research group PBL-ARTES , Aalborg University, focuses on research questions concerning advancement of PBL and Engineering Education.

The research profile combine perspectives on learning theory, theory of science and technological development to address areas of research related to PBL and engineering education.


The research organisation and network comprise a UNESCO chair for Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education and the Danish Centre for Engineering Education Research and Development. Among other teaching activities the research group has furthermore responsibility for Master in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education.
