Wireless Networking has begun to come of age in the modern market place. Although traditional “pure” networks still exist for the separate delivery of speech, data and video, the market trend is to implement all of these as a combination merged into one delivery system. The current status is reached by the recent innovations brought to light through encapsulation in data networks and multiplexed wide area transport. Real-time, ad-hoc, voice and video transmission are already feasible and IP emerged as the fundamental fabric for the entire range of developments. The Wireless Networks Section of CPK tends to build on the latest developments to realise the Wireless Vision architecture by adopting “best of the breed” approach.

The Wireless Vision is divided into three groups, all strongly related (as depicted in the figure on the right). The Wireless Vision recognises that the value of the Internet as a common signalling medium means that IETF recommendations are becoming increasingly important for the Mobile Ad-Hoc Networking (MANET) related work of the UPSIDE vision. The following paragraphs will describe the ongoing research at the section in more detail. An expansion of research activities is expected in the near future as the section has only started her activities since June 1999.

The Wireless Networking Section also a partner in theEuropean ACTS programme ASAP.
