Mediating Discourses

Projektdetaljer

Beskrivelse

The project explores the productive relations between mediated discourse analysis (MDA) and audience studies, virtual ethnography and actor-network theory (ANT). MDA has an opportunity to draw together a variety of approaches to practices of mediation, the situated use of cultural tools and technologies, and richer conceptions of 'the social' mediation and network. Audience studies has developed refined ethnographic methodologies to investigate more deeply the variegated practices and constructions of 'audiences'. With the recent emergence of the virtual and networked society, virtual ethnography problematises the notion of 'the social' as populated by fixed boundaries and groups. ANT has radically transformed our understanding of the actor, agency, mediation and technology, providing a challenge to any conception of 'social' which is populated only by rational human actors.
