The Nordic Centre of Excellence, NORDRESS, will focus on natural hazards and societal resilience and is presented by a team of experts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, under the leadership of Dr Guðrún Gísladóttir, Professor of Geography at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. Issues related to societal security and resilience under the impact of natural hazards will be studied from the viewpoints of both natural and social sciences. This is reflected in the strong interdisciplinary approach in the proposal.
In the Nordic countries, strong emergency management and shared responsibility during crises safeguard values that are of core importance to the citizens. The core values are to protect human life and health, the economy and the environment, as well as ensure the functioning of the society. These fundamental values must be protected and the societies must have the capacity to respond effectively to disruptions that threaten them.
