Abstract

Consumers are farmers, land users in general private as well as public and citizens overall. The concept centralized biogas plants has been developed in Denmark. At present 16 plants are in operation with capacities ranging from 50-500 tons of biomass per day. The biomass consists of approximately 75-800animal manure co-digested with 20-2500 organic waste from abattoirs and various food industries. For some plants there are programs to introduce sewage sludge and municipal solid waste. The digested slurry is returned as a sanitary and nutritionally declared fertilizer product, partly to farms that supply fresh manure to the digestion process, partly to crop farms in need of organic fertilizers. Environmental and agricultural benefits include savings for farmers as a consequence of improved fertilizer efficiency and thereby reduction  of needs of chemical fertilizers. A side effect is less greenhouse gas emission and cheap, environmentally sound waste recycling.
