Abstract

Divisions and Power – A Discussion of the Status of the Social in Art History
Taking its point of departure from a critique of the concept of “the social turn” in art, as it has informed art historical discourse over the past three decades, the paper sets up the argument that “the social” constitutes an intrinsic component of art production in the 21st century. The first part of the text analyses two seminal texts in the art historical debate about the emergence of a social turn in art since the 1990s: Claire Bishop’s “The Social Turn: Collaboration and Its Discontents” (2006/2012) and Hal Foster’s “The Artist as Ethnographer”, which appeared in The Return of the Real (1996). The author argues that the reception of these texts within art historical circles has led to the normalisation of a discourse on socially engaged art that presents the social as a domain that only enters the field of art through the specific interest of socially engaged artists. Accordingly, the social does not make up an intrinsic aspect of art production. In the second part of the article, the author argues that as a consequence of the emergence in the late 1960s of a knowledge economy, and a postfordist society premised on the exchange of immaterial value, art has taken on the character of multifaceted communicative actions. Therefore, the author argues that, on a structural level, art adheres to the same procedures as those that charaterise production outside the realm of art. The author suggests that the Italian political thinker Paolo Virno’s concept of virtuous action may open up to an exploration of a communicative function embedded in contemporary art.
