Abstract

The chapter explores dilemmas of differentiated citizenship looking at civic activism and forms of resistance against discrimination, racism and othering. We look at the way rightwing populism in the Danish context has been countered by mobilizations against exclusionary and discriminating policies. Our theoretical and methodological approach draws on diverse scholarly literature reframing citizenship, democracy and social movement theory to reflect critically upon the dilemmas of differentiated citizenship, civic activism and participation in Danish politics and society. The analysis addresses the goals, strategies and motivations to act for civil society associations, pro-migrant groups, individuals and movements. Key questions are: Who are the actors involved? What are their claims? What forms of civic activism do they practice and what are the perspectives of these movements? What are the results of their activities?
