•A GyroPTO wave energy point absorber with magnetic coupling mechanism is proposed.
•A 4DOF nonlinear model of the GyroPTO absorber has been derived.
•Rational approximations are performed on the radiation damping moments.
•Synchronization of the device is more easily maintained in narrow-banded sea waves.
•The generator gain and the magnetic coupling constant influence the performance of the device.
