Abstract

Feasibility of underground data communications
is investigated by employing magnetic induction as the key
technology at physical layer. Realizing an underground wireless
sensor network for a district heating plant motivates this research
problem. The main contribution of the paper is to find the optimal
design for transmitter and receiver coil antennas, assuming predefined
wire gauge and length at both sides. Analytical results
show that the transmitter coil should have the smallest possible
radius while the converse is true for the receiver coil.
