Abstract

Abstract:

‘How do we inhabit the world in a globalised, virtual reality?'

In this paper, I discuss how visual culture emerges from various contexts across traditional distinctions between art and media and between physical and virtual spaces. Furthermore, I discuss the methodological implications of using visual cultural strategically. The empirical outset is a visual ethnographic study conducted in relation to the Dokumenta 12, in Kassel.

The presentation will examine three events:

  1. A national Manga festival which took place next to my hotel in Kassel
  2. The attributes of the art work: A  fairy tale (by the Chinese artist Ai WeWe)
  3. A conducted art tour prepared and organized by two high school students.

Firstly, I discuss the three event's potentials for learning

Secondly, I discuss the three event's contribution to the discussions of visual culture

Thirdly, I discuss the potentials of the methodology.
