    Abstract

This article’s focus is on the classroom – to be more precise – the relationships be- tween teacher, student and materiality in the study of the classroom in an elementary school. A lot has changed through time in the Danish public school: pedagogy, the view of the pu- pil, of learning, play, educational ideals, childhood, hygiene, etc. Only one thing appears unchanged in public schools today, namely the classroom. Based on classroom observa- tions the article presents and compares transformations in the socio-material interactions and relationships unfolding in a “traditional” interior design of the classroom, and a more alternative interior design. The article’s analysis illuminates a difference in the way teach- ing practices unfolds in these two different learning settings. This, followed by a difference in the nature (or ‘culture’) of teacher-student relationships practiced in the two different classroom designs. The socio-material relations are transformed - relations that involve the teacher-student relationship.
