Abstract
The increased role of international organizations in the realm of conflict management and peacebuilding in Africa is a noteworthy development. The United Nations and other international organizations have taken different roles in mediation, peacekeeping and post-conflict peacebuilding interventions. The Peacebuilding Commission under the UN, for example, has the mandate of advising, recommending as well as implementing peacebuilding interventions. One example is the Kenyan mediation process led by former Secretary General Kofi Anan after the post-election violence of 2007/8. This chapter critically examines the influence of international organizations in idea formation, norm and material dissemination to the extent that they become the yardstick for implementing peacebuilding. Thus, the one-size-fit-all model cannot capture the local conditions, capacities, political environments prevalent in the prevention, management and resolution of conflict.
