Abstract
The traditional focus of manufacturing strategy is tremendously impacted by the emergence of servitization as a new empirical phenomenon and the resource-based view (RBV) as a (relatively) new theoretical perspective. In order to understand their influence, this paper firstly tracks the evolution of theories on manufacturing strategy and then investigates, and identifies challenges still open in, the literature relating manufacturing strategy to servitization and/or the RBV. This is followed by three case studies, which are used to explore how servitization of manufacturing is organized in practice. Based on the case analyses and inspired by open source software (OSS) and open innovation, a new, open and capability (development) based role of manufacturing is suggested.
