Abstract

For many industrial applications, upgrading the machine performance by changing the rotor structure while keeping or slightly modifying the stator structure is an economic and effective solution for complying with the existing production line. Electromagnetic torque is always one of the key factors that need to be evaluated. An intuitive and universal approach applying the same principle for torque evaluation of different AC machine types is therefore highly appreciated. In this paper, a simple and general torque expression applying the concept of equivalent Motive Force (MMF) on the stator side and equivalent magnetic field on the rotor side is introduced for general-purpose torque analysis of different AC machines. It unifies the torque production mechanism of different electromagnetic sources, e.g., armature current, permanent magnet and reluctance. In the torque evaluation of Synchronous Reluctance Machine (SynRM), as a new concept, the high salient rotor structure is equivalent to a smooth iron cylinder with assumed current load, which leads to a straightforward torque analysis under the same principle.
