In this presentation I will give an overview about recent advances in face recognition and in iris recognition and discuss advantages and disadvantages for various application scenarios.
While the idea of an automatic recognition of the human face has been around for many years, only since recently, approaches have become good enough for more serious applications. The advantage of face recognition is that the level of cooperation of the human subject with the electronic system is limited: faces can be detected and recognised even in non-ideal setups. E.g. modern consumer-type digital cameras are already able to detect faces as soon as the human looks approximately into the camera. Unfortunately, the performance of face recognition approaches is still limited and it is much lower than that of iris recognition. Iris recognition out-performs even finger print recognition in terms of precision while it requires the same amount of cooperation between the human and the recognition system.
