Description

International Workshop from 14-15 February 2018, Institute of Communication & Psychology

Organizers: Antonia Krummheuer (Associate Prof.), Mattering: Centre for Discourse & PracticeCarolin Demuth (Associate Prof.), Center for Developmental & Applied Psychological Science

In tradition with an ethnomethodological /conversation analytical view this workshop takes a multimodal and resource-oriented approach to ’atypcial interaction’ with children and adolescents in institutional settings. We are especially interested in children’s communicative abilities and the interlocutor’s scaffolding and guiding practices that enable or restrict participation of these children. The workshop aims for a discussion and scholarly exchange on existing research projects and work practices on the topic with the idea of identifying needs for future research as well as collaboration opportunities. International experts from interdisciplinary fields who understand language as situated embodied practice comprising multiple modalities (gestures, voice quality, gaze, touch etc.) will discuss the following topics:

•How can a multimodal perspective help to make visible children’s communicative competences beyond verbal speech, as well as ways of intersubjectivity in interaction with children with communication impairment and accordingly improve scaffolding and guiding practices?

•How can a multimodal perspective help to understand the interplay of social situation, multimodal resources and children’s use of assistive or other technologies to inform the design and/or implementation of interactive technologies in institutional/educational settings.

Participants are invited scholars from the UK, Sweden, Germany and Denmark, as well as representatives of the Center for Anvendt Adfærdsanalyse, Aarhus, and the Neurocenter Østerskoven, Hobro.
