Voices in Transition. The Dialogical Self in Significant Movement: How Does this Sound? (Symposium)

Activity: Talks and presentationsConference presentations

Description

The aim of this panel is to gain a deeper understanding of the dialogical nature of language and self by looking at the role of voice, particularly the collective voice, in processes of transition. Voice, as central to the self’s dialogicality, displays both aspects of persons in their mutual contact and interference: individual voices and collective voices building up its dynamic polyphony. The three contributions explore the entanglement of individual and collective voices in the perspective of transition, assuming that in this specific moment of change and transformation the dynamics between individual and collective voice are particularly present.
The first contribution (Carolin Demuth) addresses polyphonic dynamics in the classroom activities of an North-Indian pre-school that transits form a conventional Indian pedagogy to a European Montessori pedagogic model. The study draws both on video recordings of classroom interactions and on the teacher’s reflective comments when watching these video recordings.
The second contribution (Andrea Karsten) addresses transition from apprentice to expert researcher in academia, taking a close look at the voices active in writing. It shows how individual and collective voices guide and construct personal transitions, stressing the role of language practice in and for the Self.
The third contribution (Marie-Cécile Bertau) presents a study with US-American adolescents who experience some kind of struggle during their developmental transition. Their struggle is related to the conflicting agendas of the communities between which they are transiting; it is experienced and articulated in the performance of different kinds of voices and their conflicting, negotiating dialogues.
