Structural Reliability

The research area deals with probabilistic handling of uncertainties regarding strengths and actions on load-bearing structures and determination of the safety (reliability) of structures based on knowledge of load and strength parameters. In the coming years, major interest in research focused on rational, reliability-based planning of inspection and maintenance strategies, assessment of´the safety of existing structures and determinatin of a probabilistic basis for design of structures is to be expected. Structures for which such research is particularly relevant are e.g. large bridges, offshore structures and marine wind turbines.

Research

  • Reliability-based inspection and maintenance planning with regard to material decomposition (fatigue, corrosion, penetration of chlorides...) for e.g. steel and concrete bridges and offshore structures.
  • Reliability-based reassessment of existing structures (e.g. steel and concrete bridges and offshore structures) including safety evaluations in connection eith removal of offshore structures.
  • Stochastic modelling of loads, e.g. extreme wind and wave loads on offshore structures.
  • Stochastic modelling of materials and structures (at element and system level), e.g. offshore structures.
  • Risk analysis in connection with civil engineering structures.
  • Stochastic modelling of uncertainties in connection with life-cycle evaluations.
