7. Personal reflections and initiatives: Here you may state any personal deliberations as regards teaching and supervision, any wishes and plans for further pedagogic development, plans for following up on feedback/evaluations from students, etc.

My teaching and supervision experiences span more than 18 years. The main aim of my teaching and supervision is to fuel the interest of students and to inspire them to seek their own understanding and make their own contribution. I prefer the students to get ‘their hands dirty’ and try out the theories, principles and methods on their own, working with cases, labs, appropriate software and online services etc. In my experience, active involvement fosters understanding and independent thinking, and ensures the best possible grounds for acquiring the intended competencies and skills. Whenever possible I involve students actively in current research, often leading to joint publications. My main teaching and supervision strengths are in the areas of information science, but I bridge to computer science topics in areas such as Information Retrieval, Databases, XML, Information Architecture, Human Centered Informatics, Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction and processing Cultural Heritage for information access as well strong competences in teaching research methodology and statistics.

I find great joy in supervising Master’s and Bachelor students for the possibility it offers to more deeply explore research topics of joint interest. I have supervised student on a wide variety of topics, such as the ones listed above, and many groups on the Master’s program in Human-Centered Informatics.

I enjoy working with project-based teaching, which I find especially appropriate e.g. to topics in information architecture and interaction design, which combine on one hand theoretical principles and on the other practical applications. In addition, I wish to work further on alignment of course goals, intended learning outcomes, learning activities, assessment and grading. In this I am greatly inspired by the work of John Biggs on ‘Teaching for Quality Learning’ and see the Danish ‘competence framework’ as a good starting point.
