Wireless Networks The leading wireless technical forums (3GPP, 3GPP2 and MWIF), have selected the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for session management within the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in UMTS Rel. 5. The IMS servers that deploy SIP are referred to as Call Session Control Function (CSCF) servers. SIP is an application-layer protocol for creating, modifying and terminating sessions. To provide reliable SIP services, an underlying fault-tolerance system is required, comprising three subsystems: state-sharing, failure-detection and fail-over management. The goal of the project is to develop and implement cluster-based (RTP) and distributed fault-tolerant platforms (DNS and RSerPool) for the IMS CSCF servers. Upon implementation, the systems are evaluated and their performances compared with respect to an appropriately selected set of parameters. The project also aims at devising an adaptive server selection policy for optimizing the performance of the fault-tolerant system. (Marjan Bozinovski, Thibault Renier, Kim Larsen and Hans Schwefel)
