antprop The theoretical analysis of multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) systems conventionally treats the wireless channel between each transmitter and each receiver as a random process. Although this is true in several situations, there are environments where the nature of the channel gain is highly deterministic. For example, propagation in a waveguide can only occur in the waveguide modes that are uniquely specified by the dimensions of the waveguide and the dielectric/ conductive properties of its boundaries. In that case the channel transfer function for a given transmitter/ receiver pair is uniquely determined by the location and polarization of the transmitting/ receiving elements. Another common assumption of the theoretical studies is that of independent channel gains. Correlation has been shown to reduce the capacity of MIMO systems. The purpose of this study is to express the channel correlation in a hallway environment by using the waveguide mode analysis: given the deterministic nature of the channel in a waveguide of known dimensions and dielectric/conductive properties, how can the channel correlation be expressed in terms of the waveguide modes. We explore the dependence of correlation on the distance between the transmitting and the receiving array, the polarization of the antenna elements, their vertical/horizontal separation.
