Description
The last decade has witnessed a huge growth in the number of mobile subscribers all over the world. Since its early introduction in the 90’s, users of GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) and its evolutions represent today more than 3.5 billion subscribers according to. In parallel, driven by Internet success, data communication shows a tremendous growth. Convergence between those two trends leads to the emergence of new systems and devices to enable broadband wireless communications. The recent market success of devices at the border of communication and multimedia such as smart phones and mobile broadband enabled laptops is driving the operator revenues from voice centric models to data models and is increasing the demand for data communication capacity on mobile cellular systems.
Nowadays, after several evolutions of mobile systems standards and general adoption of data services, the requirements expressed for the next generation broadband wireless services are even more challenging. For instance, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in the framework of IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications – Advanced) systems has defined a downlink target of 1Gbit/s for low mobility and 100Mbit/s for high mobility for mobile wireless communication scenarios.
SAMURAI is a European Community founded project that will propose innovative techniques in the area of Multi User-MIMO (MU-MIMO) and Sspectrum Aggregation. These two techniques are considered hot topics from both the academic and the industrial/standardization point of view.
MU-MIMO refers to a system where a transmitter equipped with multiple antennas is communicating with several users simultaneously on the same physical resources. Users can have multiple antennas too, but this is not a necessity. Especially the downlink (or broadcast) channel has received a lot of attention, since it is a major issue for emerging cellular systems, such as the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE (Long Term Evolution). The downlink is also the main focus of the SAMURAI project.
SA refers to the simultaneous usage of multiple and eventually non contiguous chunks of spectrum. This technique is useful in both throughput maximization and Interference Coordination and Management. As a matter of fact, having the possibility to transmit in a flexible way, autonomously selecting the proper spectrum chunks is considered nowadays a must in next generation communication systems.
The main novelty of the approach adopted in the SAMURAI project is to pay a particular attention to the practical implementation and deployment aspects. The constraints from real life system implementation will be taken into account, from the design of signalling needed to support these schemes to hardware/software implementation issues. Further, the SAMURAI project will demonstrate MU-MIMO and SA on real-time testbeds.
