Deliberative and republican models of democratic citizenship are motivationally demanding. They need to direct citizens deliberation from private to common interests. This project discusses a set of theories of the motivational sources for democratic citizenship. 1) A national vs political identity models (David Millers, Andrew Mason, Cécile Laborde and others); 2) The practices of the common school (Elizabeth Anderson and others); 3) The practices of civil society and the public sphere (Rainer Forst, Arato/Cohen, Jürgen Habermas); 4) Experiences of structural cooperation (Axel Honneth, Émile Durkheim, John Dewey, Jürgen Habermas;
