Abstract
District heating is essential to achieve a fossil free society in Denmark and the EU.
4DH is an international research centre which develops 4th Generation District Heating Technologies and Systems (www.4dh.dk).
In 4DH synergies are created between 1) Grids and components for low temperature district heating, 2) Analyses of production and system integration, and 3) Tools and methodologies for planning and implementation.
With lower and more flexible distribution lower temperatures renewable energy sources can be utilized, while cost effectively meeting the requirements of low-energy buildings and energy conservation measures in the existing building stock.
In Heat Roadmap Europe, the principals developed under the 4DH project have been applied at an EU level to demonstrate how district heating can reduce the cost of a low-carbon EU energy system by €100 billion per year (www.heatroadmap.eu).
