Abstract

How do people learn via participating in a professional practice? How can we combine traditional learning theory with analysis of what happens in the routinized practice in organisations? And how can we use micro analysis of professional practice to investigate and create more effective and efficient learning processes? These questions are discussed in this article on analyzing learning processes in professional practice. By combining learning theory with two recent microsociological studies of students doing their internship periods as nurses and journalists, we demonstrate how these newcomers learn via participating in the professional practice and how different learning environments create different opportunities for learning. Furthermore, we present a range of practical advice when aiming at doing this type of research.
