    Abstract

Energy and environmental assessment of two typical building projects in Copenhagen - a renovating project and a new building project - demonstrates that new building consumes significantly less energy and emits less CO2 than renovation regardless of variations of life time and heat source. Even if new building 'costs' more during the execution stage in terms of CO2 emission than renovation, the new building will already have balanced the expenditure after 25-30 years. New building is substantially more economic in terms of energy in the operating phase.
