    Abstract

It is quite possible to satisfy requirements to good daylight conditions without jeopardising the wish for good architecture. This is the result of an investigation of seven buildings made by researchers from By og Byg in collaboration with four daylight experts. The seven buildings are very different but the investigation showed that in general the amount and quality of daylight depends not only on the size of the windows, but also on other factors such as the depth of window openings, the surfaces of the rooms, sun screenings and outdoor vegetation. The report gives several examples of how insolation and glare from the windows can be reduced and how to prevent dark areas at the back of rooms. The report shows how significant energy saving can be achieved when the rooms have sufficient and functional daylight which makes the use of artificial lighting unnecessary for much of the year.
