Abstract
The article describes how employers perceive the
older unemployed, unemployed immigrants and
the long-term unemployed. The theoretical point is
that the labour market is plagued by fundamental
information problems, which create a fear of hiring
a «lemon» and make the use of statistical discrimination
likely. The article is based on a survey among
1775 private Danish employers carried out in 2006.
The article argues that being among the long-term
unemployed gives very negative signals, especially
during a period of economic boom. The article also
argues that when an employer has had experience
with ethnic minorities and older workers at the
work-place, the perceived risk of hiring unemployed
members of these groups is reduced. This effect
is not found for the long-term unemployed, i.e.
experience with hiring long-term unemployed does
not lower the perceived risk of hiring from this
group of unemployed.
