Abstract

As scholars at Aalborg University, Denmark we work closely with museum practitioners to engage youth in defining the future of museums. Our aim here is to clarify the circumstances under which this is possible. Denmark is a member of the growing list of countries having an internet penetration rate above 80% and our findings may indicate a trend for a society more saturated by digital technologies. The teenagers we work with are more digital media literate than the generation before them, and it is important to communicate with them using the media of their choice and on their terms. But that said, they are not that different from other age segments in today's digitally saturated society. Targeting the teenagers with digital technologies could be the way, not only to reach a new young audience, but also to engage current visitors at a higher level.
