    Abstract

A single-degree-of-freedom inelastic system subject to a stochastic excitation in form of a Poisson-distributed train of impulses is considered. The state variables of the system form a non-diffusive, Poisson-driven Markov process. Two approximate
analytical techniques are developed: modification of an equivalent linearization techni que and substituting the non-analytical non-linearity in the original system by the cubic form in the pertinent state variables. The response moments are evaluated for the equivalent systems with the help of a generalized Ito's differential rule. The analytical results are verified against the Monte Carlo simulations.
