Open Data Visualization in Schools

Abstract

The Internet has fundamentally changed the way we create, exchange
and interact with knowledge. Today, we are living in an
age of computers, technologies and big data, an era categorized
by fast collection of global information. Open Data is a form of
data that can make data more beneficial and more independent as
anyone can access, use and share it. Open Data is being used by
governments, businesses and individuals to bring social, economic
and environmental benefits. However Open Data remains as yet
largely unexplored in many other fields, in particular in the field
of education. There is a need to increase the public value, where
not only citizens but also school children and young people can
be able to participate in the discussions, work with Open Data in
order to define associated problems within their own areas and find
solutions for these problems. The young generation of pupils and
students need to develop such digital competencies and learn how to
work with data as data literacy becomes essential in this digitized
world. Data visualization plays an important role in order to visually
understand, get insight and interpret data. To ensure the involvement
of students it is necessary that students are able to understand Open
Data and make use of it. It is important to present and visualize
the complex data in a way that is clear to school children. More
research efforts are needed in order to better equip school students
with the skills to understand and use data. It is also important to
reduce the gap between the technical and humanistic collaboration
to assess how school children acquire data visualization literacy and
how we can re-design educational models to improve these skills. In
this paper we contribute with the analysis and visualization of Open
Data of Copenhagen city for public schools. For the full engagement
of the school children with these new concepts we re-designed
curriculum in a close collaboration with teachers. The paper has
mainly two parts, one is the technical part where we will visualize
different data sets available on the City of Copenhagen Open Data
website https://data.kk.dk for school students with particular focus
on how they can understand these data sets using visualizations. The
second part is related more to the participation and learning skills
of students i.e. which competencies are required in order to understand
different types of Open Data and which existing visualization
techniques can be used by the school students easily. A survey of
teachers is carried out in order to re-design curriculum in a variety
of subjects to find out which skills students should have to understand
and to work with different data sets and visualizing techniques. Based on teacher’s interviews on presented Open Data visualizations,
we develop and study design principles for novel interactive
teaching materials aimed at increasing children’s visualization and
data literacy and to boost their digital skills.
