Abstract

Service design education is still young and it is still interpreted in many different ways, according to the design programs where it usually plays a minor role. Very few education schemes provide a complete curriculum on service design, facing the challenge of equipping a designer who will want to have a dominant role in providing solutions for people, supporting new forms of social innovation that happen through new processes both in public and private services. This paper tries to map the new value-creation process in a three level structure, proposing a framework of new competences and tools that are being developed in design education and research. The value in use, the infrastructuring and the governance levels are explained with the specific tools and approaches required according to the specific aim of the design activity: that is, whether it is about understanding, transforming or communicating a service.
