Three-Dimensional Model Test Optimisation of the New Cubipod Armoured Western Breakwater for Port of Hanstholm

Research output: Book/ReportReportResearch

Abstract

The present report presents results from a three-dimensional model test study carried out at Aalborg University in August and September 2018 with the new western breakwater in Port of Hanstholm as proposed by the contractor Aarsleff and their consultant COWI. The present report presents new model tests with a similar setup as the tests by Eldrup and Lykke Andersen (2018c). Due to an updated design bathymetry reinforcement of the structure had to be performed and verified/optimized in physical model tests. Moreover, the Port of Hanstholm required that the western breakwater is designed without taking into account any positive effects the spur breakwater may have on its stability. The objectives of the model tests were to study the hydraulic stability of the roundhead and adjacent trunk with the new bathymetry and without the spur breakwater. Afterwards the western breakwater is tested with the spur breakwater, cf. Eldrup and Lykke Andersen (2018d). The scale used for the model tests was 1:44.9. Unless otherwise specified all values given in this report are prototype values converted from the model to prototype according to the Froude model law.
