Urban pram strolling

Mobility with children is radically different from individual mobility. In many ways, the planning, embodied experience and everyday practice of urban mobility is completely rearranged when one is on the move with children. Set within the context of Copenhagen, this chapter addresses the situational challenges of urban pram strolling, and explores some of the tactics developed by pram strollers in caring for mobility on behalf of their infants. I argue that pram strolling is more than an instrumental act of ‘pushing a pram’, but a complex socio-material and non-representational practice that shapes the way pram strollers interpret and re-appropriate urban design intentions. The chapter makes two contributions. First, it promotes a new way of engaging with children-family mobilities through mobilities design thinking and multimodal ethnography. Secondly, it develops a new sociological term, homo cura, to call into attention the large group of urban inhabitants who travel with children and have specific mobility needs. The chapter concludes by shortly discussing topical issues related to urban accessibility, rights to the city and not least the interpretive flexibility of urban infrastructures.
