Course description This PhD course bridges the fields of mobilities research and the Arts by breaking new grounds in relation to how mobilities research may incorporate a new sensitivity within the Arts to how everyday life mobilities may be captured, reflected upon, and comprehended. The course aims to ‘learn from the Arts’ in order to move away from a naïve representational perspective towards more pragmatic and experimental understanding of mobilities research. Looking towards the Arts the course organizers wish to introduce the participants to new and creative forms of engaging with the ‘performative’ common ground that we claim exists between Arts and research. It explores the ‘analytical power of social science and the Arts’ in respect to the future of mobilities. The course is targeted towards all mobilities researchers regardless of their background as it partly introduces to how mobilities can be reflected and theorized on in novel ways (e.g. by drawing on utopian thoughts in architecture and design) as well as it introduces to art projects as a way of engaging with new experimental and participatory methodologies (e.g. art projects in public spaces). The course also investigates projects at the interfaces between research and arts. Next to the theoretical and methodological ambitions, the course aims at training the participants in re-thinking their own research practices in order to include new dimensions of the imaginary, aesthetic, affects, and emotional dimensions to mobilities research. These are dimensions of vital importance that until now only sparsely have been engaged within traditional mobilities research. By looking towards the Arts these important dimensions are included into the vocabulary of mobilities researchers. The course will draw upon various Art forms spanning from landscape paintings towards performative and interactive technologies and artistic installations. The course will be organized as a dialogue between cases within the Arts, theoretical lectures, and workshops where the participants are invited to reflect upon their own research projects in the light of the cases and the concepts presented.
