The question of how a person with communicative challenges can become a part of social life is thus regarded as a major concern for practitioners. While the WHO-document aims to categorise participating, the panel shifts the focus on participation by taking up an interactional perspective. Bases on an ethnomethodological and conversation analytical perspective the contributions of this panel understand participation as “actions demonstrating forms of involvement performed by parties within evolving structures of talk” (Goodwin & Goodwin, 2004, p. 222). This panel challenges the traditional cognitive view on mental impairments within the individual as well as approaches that decontextualize participation by for example measuring certain variables. On the contrary, we stress the importance of the socio-material and interactional context that can provide rich resources to enable people with limited communication means to become "competent speakers" (see e.g. Goodwin 2004). The panel aims to discuss participation across different forms of communicative challenges and different interactional settings to get a complex view on the situated, interactional, multimodal and material management of participation in everyday practices of people living with limited communication means. Questions that will be addressed are: • How do participants collaborate in interaction where at least one person has a limited communicative means? • Can we differentiate different roles/or forms of involvement and how does especially the person with limited communicative means become a "competent" participants? • Can we differentiate different kinds of participants and different kinds of participation? • What can we learn from these forms of participation about the interactional management of communicative challenges? The panel consist of two time slots of 90 minutes with 6 presenters. Each presenter has 20 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for discussion. The panel will end with a final discussion.
