Challenging behavior – discourse and interaction at residential homes. An institutional ethnographic intervention in problematic interactions

Aktivitet: Foredrag og mundtlige bidragKonferenceoplæg

During the last six years, we have explored the interactions between residents and professionals at residential homes for people with autism, mental illness, intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries and dementia. Following an institutional ethnographic design, we have tried to describe the life-world of both residents and professionals and identify the forms of interaction that led to conflicts and what was professionally denominated ‘challenging behavior’. Our results conveyed in the form of ‘thick descriptions’ and dialogues have radically changed paradigms and epistemologies of professional social work at these residential homes. The paper will present and discus some of the guidelines, reflections, and results from this kind of institutional ethnography carried out in one of the most difficult and ‘challenging’ fields of social work practice.
