The COVID19-crisis has made the concept of paradox more relevant and resonant by surfacing the “invisible currents of paradox” (Quinn & Nujella, 2017, p. vii). Whilst employees and stakeholders may request simplicity and short-term solutions with clear answers and accountability, the complexity during crisis also exacerbates mutual dependencies, demonstrating that sustainable coping must involve a broad group of stakeholders who can tolerate contradictory relationships. COVID19 has highlighted the ability to communicate paradox as central to a stakeholder or eco-system view of paradox. We need to explore further the ways in which leaders, followers and other stakeholders engage in and resonate with paradox in order to realize the potential of paradoxical sensemaking and decision-making beyond the individual manager.
