This round table brings together audiovisual professionals and scholars in television and media studies to explore the challenges and opportunities surrounding gender representation in serial dramas within the streaming era. With a particular focus on European young adults, both as key viewers and as on-screen protagonists, the session will examine in particular how global streaming platforms shape gender narratives, influence production choices, and impact viewing habits.
Key topics include the persistent challenges of breaking gender stereotypes, the role of streaming platforms in promoting (or hindering) diversity, and the creative approaches adopted by European producers and creators in serial drama storytelling. The discussion will also address how European young adults engage with serial dramas, considering their evolving consumption habits and the influence they exert on production trends. Finally, the round table will critically assess the interplay between industry practices, audience expectations, and the broader cultural landscape in Europe, highlighting the complexities of achieving meaningful gender representation in an increasingly globalised streaming market.
