Beskrivelse

In my thinking brain (neural networks) and consciousness (states and levels) are related but not identical. In the same way the musical experience is different from patterns observed or mapped in the ’musical brain’ during music activity (listening as well as active ’musicing’). In music therapy musical experiences – active as well as receptive – are used for therapeutic purposes that may cover the whole span from psychophysiological to spiritual. The more intensive the musical experience the better for the therapy and the client. But what is ’musical intensity’, how does it relate to emotions, and how is the relationship between measurable properties such as EEG patterns and musical wave forms on one hand and emotional responses or musical imagery experiences on the other? Outgoing from an Australian study (Lem 1999) that correlates EEG patterns, wave forms and musical analysis of G. Piernés Concertstück for harp and chamber orchestra I will discuss his findings and compare them to my own study of wave form, musical intensity and imagery experiences from receptive music therapy sessions with cancer survivors (Bonde 2005). I will present hermeneutic analyses of music by Bach and Brahms and the imagery experiences of the cancer patients. Based on these analyses I will discuss the concept of musical intensity. I will end the presentation with some questions for discussion, such as: How can musical brain research contribute to a better understanding of musical intensity and the application of music experiences in therapy?
