Beskrivelse
The social constructionist approach to society and organisations has turned to the everyday (language) practices of people, how do they ‘do' or ‘constitute' their work or leisure activity, their work or leisure place, and their work or leisure identity. In linguistics, the analytical gaze is shifted away from syntax or even semantics as the decisive site for meaning that also is regarded as an outcome of an interpretive process, rather than being totally defined before occasions of use. In line with these developments, Mediated Discourse Analysis (Scollon 2001) turned away from analysing texts as units of meaning to researching the action that is taken with the texts (either in their production or consumption). The focus shift was not only theoretical, but informed and demanded by the failures that, for instance, could be seen in how badly information campaigns work: It is not the design of the text of the leaflet that is crucial, but the design of the action of leafletting. The theoretical focus on action then led Scollon to define theoretical-analytical concepts that are essential to understand and analyse action: mediated action, site of engagement, mediational means, practice, nexus of practice and community of practice. Now language use was situated in a much more complex action environment, and any analysis could have many important trajectories. To help researchers in focussing on the relevant aspects of the action (and the social issue) they deal with, Ron and Suzie Scollon suggest a hands-on research framework, nexus analysis (Scollon & Scollon 2004).Scollon, Ron (2001) Action and text: Toward an integrated understanding of the place of text in social (inter)action.
