Beskrivelse

Dementia leads to deficits in cognitive functions, which further leads to difficulties in meaning making. A strong sense of meaning in life is important for wellbeing and health, also in severe dementia. Music influences us at various levels, and may also influence at a semantic level where meaning is created. Persons with Alzheimer’s disease often have a surprisingly well preserved musical memory, and music may therefore be a means for meaning making. In particular nostalgic music from the past may bring meaning to the present and in this way give opportunities for validating existential suffering. Examples from clinical music therapy work will be given and discussed with a perspective on dementia, memory, nostalgia and existential suffering.
