Centripetal and centrifugal trajectories of dialogue: how to engage citizens in a transition process
Departing from Bakhtin’s conceptualization of dialogism involving centrifugal and centripetal forces, we will address selected examples of tensions and challenges identified in a study of citizen involvement in the municipality of Frederikshavn in 2009. Through examples of discourses about climate change mitigation, we invite a discussion of how specific discourses have a potential for opening up dialogue, while other at times conflicting discourses may constrain the participants’ scope of action and position them as passive subjects in the engagement process. In our talk we will touch upon possible tensions between top-down and bottom-up approaches to public engagement, encouraging workshop participants to reflect upon the role played by discourses and processes of dialogic involvement.
