Panellist, Long Table Discussion: “Death and Dying in Carceral America – Rethinking Meanings of Care,” Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS)

As part of Professor Lesley Sharp’s visit to AIAS, my contribution explored emerging tensions in the Danish Prison and Probation Service at the intersection of punishment, welfare, and care. The discussion focused on recent policy developments following the new sentencing reform, which allocates dedicated funding for specialized units for particularly vulnerable prisoners. At the same time, I highlighted a contrasting development in which more resourceful inmates are assigned caregiving tasks for ill or frail fellow prisoners. These tendencies raise important questions about how notions of care, responsibility, and rehabilitation are being reconfigured within the framework of the Danish welfare state and the evolving penal landscape.
