Beskrivelse

Short description of the course: Philosophical pragmatism experiences currently not only a philosophical revival in form of neo-pragmatism - most prominently with philosophers such as Richard Rorty, Robert Brandom and Hilary Putnam - but also a resurgence in many quite different disciplines, such as architecture, organizational studies or media theory. Traditionally philosophical pragmatism exhibited a strong impact on the social sciences from its very beginning at the University of Chicago, where John Dewey collaborated with Robert E. Park and the Chicago School of sociology and later with the contributions of George H. Mead whose work became canonical for the tradition of symbolic interactionism (Blumer). The PhD course on pragmatism and practices is not so much interested in the history of pragmatism and neo-pragmatism, but in the impact pragmatism and pragmatic thought exerts as a form of applied philosophy on different disciplines. The course focuses on the one hand on pragmatism as a tool for research design and philosophy of science, thus utilizing the problem defining and problem solving approach to research and knowledge pragmatism advocates. And on the other hand the course focuses on the understanding of practices - be it cognitive, embodied or instrumental practices - and how they can be conceptualized and investigated. Invited are not only students that work with pragmatic theories but also students that would like to give their research question a pragmatic twist. Students from philosophy and humanities, the social sciences as well as the natural sciences or engineering are welcome. The course will consist of 3 or 4 lectures and presentations of student papers, which will receive comments of two professors and will be discussed by the other students. Each PhD -student presents shortly his/her project with main focus on the subject, choice of subject and methods (e.g. 3 pages). After that the student shall present a main topic of her/his thesis including considerations about how the theories relate to pragmatism and practices. The whole presentation should not be longer than 15 pages. Deadline for subscribing for the course: 30 April 2013. Deadline for submission of papers: 30 April 2013. The fee of 500 DKK covers coffee, tea, lunch etc. during the course and one dinner for all participants. There will be the possibility for joint dinners the other days, which the participants should pay for themselves.
