From August 17-19 2016 this year’s summer school took place at Nordkraft under the headline Qualitative Methods and Data Analysis. The purpose of the summer school was to discuss different approaches and strategies for collecting and analyzing qualitative data. There is a lot of literature about research methods and techniques and these are often thoroughly accounted for in research projects, but considerations about for instance exactly what should be considered as data and how to conduct analysis are often more sparse. The course thus focused on analysis of qualitative data in a broad sense, including relations between the researcher and the researched as well as the processes of conducting and writing up qualitative research.
The summer school included conventional lectures, presentations from participants, feedback sessions as well as walk-and-talk sessions with peer discussions among the 23 participants that had enrolled in the course.
From Department of Culture and Global Studies the teachers at the summer school was Lotte Bloksgaard, Stine Thidemann Faber, Trine Lund Thomsen from Department of Culture and Global studies together with Sune Qvortrup Jensen from Department of Sociology and Social Work. Senior lecturer Penny Tinkler from Manchester University also attended the summer school giving two lectures and providing feed back to the ph.d.-students during the presentation sessions. Penny Tinkler specializes in social and historical inquires, and the use of photo-elicitation in interviews, to explore qualitative research questions about the present and past.
