Trusted and actionable knowledge is more important than ever. It helps us address global challenges such as climate change, migration and public health within a context of complexity, uncertainties and rapid changes. At the same time there are signs of a growing public distrust in experts, sometimes exacerbated by lack of clarity, openness and transparency. The need for greater mutual understanding between science and policy communities – as well as the wider public – is a key pathway to create trust. Working together across boundaries and creating safe interfaces between science, policy and society is essential but also contested. Tensions can arise when science meets societal values. Early engagement with policy makers, and a stronger role for social sciences, can foster the co-creation of evidence-based policies with a higher degree of social acceptability. This presentation summarises discussions and key messages of recent international research on science advice and science communication.

The European environment information and observation network (Eionet) is a partnership network of the European Environment Agency and its member and cooperating countries. The EEA works closely with national focal points (NFPs), which are based in national environment agencies or environment ministries. NFPs are responsible for coordinating national networks, involving many institutions. The EEA currently has 32 member countries and six cooperating countries. The 32 member countries include the 27 European Union Member States together with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey
