Beskrivelse
Several systematic literature reviews point at a positive effect of music therapy for persons with dementia, however a Cochrane review (Vink et al, 2011) offers no conclusions in relation to the effect of music therapy on dementia due to methodological limitations. In addition, recent randomized controlled trials show conflicting results in relation to the effect of music therapy on agitation in dementia. In medical research the gold standard is randomized controlled trials where the variables are explicitly defined. Person-centred music therapy can be described as a complex treatment modality. For a complex treatment, some researchers would claim that the function and process of the intervention rather than the components themselves should be standardized (Hawe, Shiell & Riley, 2004). In the presentation we will give an overview of recent research in music therapy and dementia care and discuss the implications for music therapy as a complex treatment modality and notions for future research with special focus on multisite studies and various levels of research collaboration. We will present the newest research and conclusions from meta-analyses and systematic reviews, and discuss how music therapy researchers deal with the demands of evidence based medicine. Among other sources, we will discuss the Narrative Synthesis review by McDermott et al. (2012) and present the results from an explorative randomized trial investigating the effect of music therapy on agitation in dementia (Ridder, Stige, Qvale, & Gold, 2013).Symposium: Interdisciplinary collaboration in music therapy for persons with dementia – in practice and research
